WARNING: Potential Spoilers for Amazons Attack #6!Shazam, Mary Marvel, and various other members of their family may have all been blessed with the powers of multiple gods and goddesses; however, one family member has become an ACTUAL god, shaking up the Marvel Family power hierarchy. And how did this member reach their newfound godly status? Well, they ate an apple.
In Amazons Attack #6 by Josie Campbell and Vasco Georgiev, the DCU’s Amazon conflict reaches a climax as Queen Nubia, Faruka, Yara Flor, Cassie Sandsmark, Mary Marvel, and Hoppy (the Marvel bunny) confront Asylum – the ancient Amazon responsible for sowing discord among the Amazons and the world of men using the Apples of Discord.
Asylum, aided by Doctor Sivana, plans to unleash the Apples of Discord worldwide, instigating attacks that will be attributed to the Amazons. However, before they can execute their plan, Faruka offers Hoppy an Apple of Discord, granting him god-like powers that enable him and Mary to thwart the impending attacks.
Having consumed the Apple of Discord, Hoppy proclaims with a surge of power that he can now “see all times and all places,” alluding to the god-like omnipresence he has attained. This newfound ability to perceive all time and places seamlessly integrates with Hoppy’s existing teleportation capabilities, enhancing his endurance and overall strength. Previously, Hoppy would experience fatigue after creating just one or two portals, but now, he can effortlessly open multiple portals in rapid succession without experiencing exhaustion. As a result, his powers have reached their zenith.
This newfound omnipresent ability enables Hoppy to pinpoint the locations of all the Apples of Discord and create portals to reach them, allowing Mary Marvel to swiftly destroy them and thwart any ongoing attacks. Hence, his power-up also immensely benefits Mary Marvel. In the inaugural issue of Campbell’s Mary Marvel-focused comic series, The New Champion of Shazam!, Hoppy was introduced as the pet rabbit of one of Mary’s college roommates, who later becomes enchanted, granting him his teleporting powers. Thus, from a mere pet rabbit to a godly rabbit, Hoppy has certainly come a long way.
Although Campbell’s Amazons Attack storyline concludes with issue #6, the journey of Mary Marvel and Hoppy is far from over. Josie Campbell will continue their story in Shazam #10 next month (April 2024). This upcoming issue presents an opportunity for fans to discover whether Hoppy will maintain his newfound god-like abilities or revert to his previous teleportation powers. If Hoppy retains his omnipresent powers, he will not only surpass Mary Marvel in strength but also Shazam, thus significantly altering the power dynamics within the Marvel Family.
