Gov Alia inaugurates Benue Electoral Commission members

Governor Hyacinth Alia of Benue State has sworn in a seven members of the State Independent Electoral Commission, BSIEC.

The governor, while inaugurating the members on Thursday in Makurdi, tasked the Commission, which has Dr John Chen as its Chairman, to immediately begin processes for the conduct of free, credible and inclusive council polls.

โ€œEach of you has been selected based on your nonpartisan stance; outstanding qualifications, integrity, and unwavering commitment to democratic principles fundamental to the progress of Benue and required for the survival of democracy.

โ€œIn nominating each member, we were guided by the law establishing the commission, which unequivocally demands that the chairman and members possess unquestionable integrity.

โ€œThis underscores the critical role that the commission plays in laying the foundation for our democracy as local councils and wards serve as the primary interface between the government and the people,โ€™โ€™ the governor said.

He urged the Commissionโ€™s members to ensure the consolidation of democracy by conducting free, fair and credible elections, accurately reflecting the will and aspirations of the people of Benue.

โ€œOur people deserve nothing less than a system where their voices are heard through their votes.

โ€œI assure you of governmentโ€™s commitment to upholding the independence of the Benue State Independent Electoral Commission. You can count on the full support of the government in the discharge of your duties.

โ€œThis government is dedicated to upholding the tenets of democracy and ensuring that the electoral process in Benue is transparent, credible, and inclusive.โ€™โ€™ Alia stressed.

He also thanked the Commissionโ€™s members for accepting to serve Benue.

He commended the House of Assembly for the good work done during the screening and confirmation of the BSIEC members.

Responding, the Commissionโ€™s chairman, Chen, said members understood the duties of their offices and the yearnings of the people of Benue.

Chen assured that members would not disappoint the governor and the people of Benue, stressing that they have a clear vision of the stateโ€™s expectations.
