American Idol's Kayko Planned To Sing This Broadway Tune On Judges' Song Contest Night

Kayko doesn’t get to participate in the Judges’ Song Contest Round on American Idol, but he’s now revealing what song he would’ve sung if he hadn’t been eliminated. During the Top 10 episode, Shania Twain stopped by to mentor the remaining American Idol season 22 contestants, who sang songs from the year they were born. Kayko performed Wheatus’ “Teenage Dirtbag,” but it wasn’t enough to keep him in the competition as he was sent home alongside Mia Matthews, who sang Shania’s “No One Needs To Know.” Before the theme nights started, Kayko had exclusively performed his own original music.

Kayko may have been eliminated from American Idol season 22, but he didn’t stop responding to his fans on social media, even amid the disappointment. In a post on Reddit that he created, a fan asked him what song choices he was given for the Judges’ Song Contest if he had advanced to the Top 8. While he didn’t divulge all the choices he had to choose from, he did reveal Ben Platt’s “You Will Be Found” from the Broadway musical Dear Evan Hansen was the song he would’ve performed.

While being mentored by Shania, he wanted to perform Britney Spears’ “Oop!…I Did It Again,” but the country music superstar didn’t like that choice. On Reddit, Kayko said he plans to record his rendition of the hit Britney song at some point. Elsewhere in the thread, he was asked who he’s rooting for now that he’s no longer on American Idol. He decided not to call out one person in particular, but instead said he’s “honestly rooting for everyone.” He did mention that Triston Harper is a “cutie,” Emmy Russell is his “long time bestie” and Will Moseley is his roommate.

The Judges’ Song Contest is one of the new themes that has been introduced in the ABC era of American Idol. Judges Katy Perry, Lionel Richie and Luke Bryan make song choices for each of the contestants, who then choose one of them to perform on the show. After their performance, they guess which judge chose that song. At the end of the night, the judge whose songs were chosen the most gets to save someone from elimination. In American Idol season 21, Katy had the most songs and saved Oliver Steele. The year before that, Katy and Luke were tied, so they both saved Lady K.

American Idol‘s Judges’ Song Contest is an exciting element of the reality show. The judges get one final opportunity to have a say in the results. In terms of the contest itself, it allows for a friendly competition between Katy, Lionel and Luke, who all have such great chemistry with each other, so it makes the experience very entertaining. Lionel has yet to win, so he’s got an opportunity in American Idol season 22 to redeem himself.

The trend of the Judges’ Song Contest winner having the ability to save a contestant will continue this year, as the official synopsis for the April 29 episode says that America will vote for the Top 6 as the Top 8 are performing, then the judges get to make a save, which will leave seven singers left in the competition once the night is over. Jack Blocker, McKenna Faith Breinholt, Emmy, Triston, Abi Carter, Julia Gagnon, Will and Kaibrienne are the eight contestants still competing, and one of them is for sure going home once the judges save the other singer with the least number of votes.
