Aremu eyes DFB Pokal Cup with Kaiserslautern

Nigerian midfielder, Afeez Aremu, hopes to end a disappointing debut season with Kaiserslautern on a positive note by winning the DFB Pokal Cup with the German club, PUNCH Sports Extra reports.

It is the first time Kaiserslautern have reached the final since 2003, when they lost to Bayern Munich.

They will face Bayer Leverkusen, who thrashed Fortuna Dusseldorf 4-0 in the final on May 25 in Berlin.

Kaiserslautern reached the German Cup final for the first time in 21 years after ending the fairytale run of third-tier side FC Saarbrucken in the semi-final on Tuesday.

To reach the semi-finals, Saarbrucken upset Bayern Munich, Borussia Monchengladbach, and Eintracht Frankfurt, but their hopes of reaching the final were dashed by second-half goals from Marlon Ritter and Almamy Toure.

โ€œItโ€™s has been a tough season for me because Iโ€™ve been on the sidelines for so long playing just three games,โ€ Aremu told PUNCH Sports Extra.

โ€œBut I see light at the end of the season. I believe we can make history by winning the DFB Pokal Cup though we have a tough opponent in Leverkusen, who are the favourites.

Aremu, whose appearances have been restricted to three totalling 46 minutes so far this season due toย  recurrent thigh injuries and suspension, also reckons Kaiserslautern will be underdogs in the final later this month but should not be written off.

โ€œI will be glad to see us win but it will be tough,โ€ Aremu said.

โ€œLeverkusen are unbeaten this season and they are favorites to win but we (Kaiserslautern) should not be underrated.โ€
