FG plans committee to raise awareness on PWD’s rights

The Minister of Information and National Orientation, Mohammed Idris, has directed the establishment of a committee to develop a framework for collaboration with the National Commission for Persons with Disabilities.

Idris gave the directive in Abuja on Wednesday when he received the Executive Secretary of the National Commission for Persons with Disabilities, James Lalu, on a courtesy visit to his office.

The committee’s goal is to raise awareness about the rights and privileges of individuals with disabilities.

Idris, in a statement signed by his media aide, Rabiu Ibrahim, on Thursday pledged the ministry’s resources to support the commission’s mission of safeguarding the rights and dignity of persons with disabilities and combating discrimination.

The minister emphasized President Bola Tinubu’s dedication to social inclusion, promising to advocate for the adoption of Disability law by state governments.

“From today, we will set up a committee that is going to work closely with you to look at your specific needs so that we can help ensure that your aims and objectives are achieved,” Idris noted.

Additionally, Idris highlighted the valuable contributions of the 35 million people with disabilities to Nigeria’s National Values Charter implementation.

The Executive Secretary of the National Commission for Persons with Disabilities, Dr James Lalu, expressed interest in collaborating with the Ministry to promote awareness of disability rights.

He stressed the importance of providing equal access to services for individuals with disabilities and highlighted their untapped potential for economic advancement.

In March, the federal government promised to stand by People With Disabilities and protect their rights against discrimination, stigmatisation and marginalisation.

The Senior Special Assistant to the President on Special Needs and Equal Opportunities, Mohammed Isa, also stressed that Tinubu has taken measures to ensure full Implementation of the National Disability Act.https://punchng.com/fg-promises-to-shield-pwds-from-stigmatisation/
