Thanks to how much it leans into the super robot genre of anime, the genre Gundam’s first anime created to work against, G Gundam is often written off as an unnecessary part of the franchise, even though it’s one of its stronger works. Mobile Fighter G Gundam is far too underrated a Gundam anime, but fortunately, it’s due to finally receiving new content. Mobile Fighter G Gundam was highlighted at the recent streaming event for Gundam’s 45th anniversary, and during the stream, it was revealed that a new Mobile Fighter G-Gundam project, possibly a sequel, was in development, with a new character for the project even being revealed.
Nothing is known about the project at this time, but above all else, it’s a perfect way for G Gundam to make a name for itself among modern anime fans.
While nothing has been revealed about Mobile Fighter G Gundam’s sequel project, it’s easy enough to guess what the plot would be about. The original anime ended with the Gundam Fight still in use, so Mobile Fighter G Gundam’s sequel will likely be about the next Gundam Fight and possibly bringing an end to it. The new character revealed during the stream will likely be a competitor in the Gundam Fight and a rival to Domon; it’s unknown how it will all play out, but overall, it’s an easy enough way for a sequel story to progress.
With Mobile Fighter G Gundam set to receive a sequel, that warrants discussion of why it should be seen as a great Gundam anime, to begin with. While it does stray from the real robot genre, Mobile Fighter G Gundam playing its super robot tropes completely straight adds a great deal of sincerity to its writing, and the contrast to other Gundam anime can also appeal to anyone wanting a change of pace. The art and animation also perfectly sell the over-the-top nature of its story, and it ends up with some of the strongest direction of any Gundam anime.
Something else worth considering is how Mobile Fighter G Gundam still maintains the core values of Gundam. Even with the actiony story and hammy dialogue, Mobile Fighter G Gundam, like most Gundam shows, is a story of people doing what they can to fight back against the oppressive elite, all of which is mixed in with an environmental message, to boot. The only difference between Mobile Fighter G Gundam and the larger Mobile Suit Gundam franchise is its presentation, and once its sequel is released, more people will hopefully understand why it deserves a second look.
