Domina season 3 is the awaited continuation of the British-Italian drama series that has received some discouraging news in 2024. Ancient Rome is a popular location to set TV shows and movies but most of those productions are from the vantage point of men. Domina flips the script and focuses on the women of the era, making critical points about women’s roles in society and how the classical world was shaped by more than just a handful of powerful men. The power struggles between the aristocratic women were just as Earth-shaking as their husbands’ fights.
Recent years have seen a growing interest in female-led period pieces and some of the top historical TV shows, like The Queen’s Gambit, The Great, and The Marvelous Mrs. Maisel are women-centric. So when Domina season 1 premiered in May 2021, there was a hungry market for the series. The success of the first season led to season 2 in July 2023, which continued the story of Livia Drusilla (Kasia Smutniak), the powerful and scheming wife of Julius Ceasar. Season 3 is expected to pick up where season 2 left off.
Unfortunately, Domina 3 was never confirmed after season 2 ended and on April 18, 2024, TVLine reported that not only was season 3 not coming anytime soon, the show had in fact been canceled. There has not been any reason given for the cancelation and no one involved with the cast or with production has been reached for comment. Likely, more information will be released later in spring 2024.
Without a season 3 planned, it’s unknown as to who could be a part of the show if it ever returns. Based on the end of season 2, however, some characters would naturally appear in the next season, if it ever arrives, barring a significant time jump. As the star of the show, Kasia Smutniak as Livia would be expected to return.
Other characters who survived the season 2 finale and would make sense to return in season 3 include Tiberius (Benjamin Isaac), Gaius (Matthew McNulty), Antonia Major (Hannah Chinn), and Piso (Darrell D’Silva) as they are all heavily involved in the plots of season 2. If season 3 ever arrives, fans will certainly want to know what happened after the death of Drusus (Ewan Horrocks).
Domina season 3 may not be on any production sheets, but season 2 ended on a number of significant moments that could hint at what any future installments would be about if MGM, the production network for season 2, ever changes its mind. At the end of season 2, Livia learns her son Drusus has died and her and Piso’s plans to restore the Roman Republic have collapsed.
Vistillius (Ethan Moorhouse) takes his own life after his deceptions are uncovered, and Tiberius smothers his illegitimate son, as he and his mother Livia plot to take power together. Season 3 of Domina could finally see Tiberius on the throne for his emperorship alongside his overbearing and increasingly power-grabbing mother is a fascinating piece of Roman history that a new season would do well to explore.
