Fondly remembered as a classic shojo anime from the 2000s alongside other beloved series like Fruits Basket and Ouran High School Host Club, Karuho Shiina’s Kimi ni Todoke: From Me to You is a staple in the demographic and a franchise that many anime fans have cited as being one of the best shojo ever made.
While the original manga ended in 2017, and the second season of the anime concluded in 2011, a third season is finally being produced to hopefully wrap up the adaptation of Shiina’s heartwarming romance story.
In addition to officially announcing that Kimi ni Todoke: From Me to You season 3 will begin airing on Netflix starting in August 2024, Netflix released a brand-new key visual and full trailer to the company’s official X account to promote the series’ exciting return.
The brand-new key visual features the main cast of Kimi ni Todoke walking together on the beach, smiling and enjoying their time together. The art style and posing used in the visual serves as an instant nostalgia hit for longtime fans of the series, perfectly characterizing everything that fans adore about the anime. That’s not the only exciting aspect of this new announcement, however, as it’s been announced that the original cast will be returning to reprise their roles.
Additionally, the series will be directed by Kenichi Matsuzawa (Highschool DxD, Persona 4: The Animation), with series composition being handled by Tomoko Konparu (Kimi ni Todoke seasons 1 & 2, NANA), SENS returning to compose the series’ music, and Michiko Yokote (xxxHolic, Call of the Night), who will be handling the series’ scripts.
Kimi ni Todoke follows a high school student named Sawako Kuronuma, jokingly referred to as “Sadako” by her classmates due to her uncanny resemblance to the character from the famous horror movie The Ring. Due to these jokes, rumors and stories have been fabricated about Sawako, which has made a majority of her peers uneasy around her – including ridiculous tales that she can see ghosts, or curse people that she doesn’t like. In reality, Sawako is a rather soft-spoken and kind young woman whose one wish is to be helpful to the people around her. Her life begins to change when a popular boy from her class, named Kazehaya, begins to hang around with her and talk to her. This creates a domino effect that leads Sawako to open up to the world around her, making friends, and even falling in love.
Kimi ni Todoke is a wholesome coming-of-age story that initially opens as a “don’t judge a book by its cover”-style romance. Shiina’s artistry and writing is masterful throughout the manga’s run, and the first two seasons of the anime adapt the source material well, which has cemented it as a classic in the shojo demographic.
