Meet Omobayo Marvellous Godwins, new Edo Deputy Governor

Edo State Governor, Godwin Obaseki, has officially sworn in Omobayo Marvellous Godwins as the new Deputy Governor of the state. This development follows the replacement of Philip Shaibu, who was impeached by the State House of Assembly on Monday morning.

Shaibuโ€™s impeachment came after the House of Assembly adopted the report of the Justice S. A. Omonua (rtd)-led impeachment panel. This panel, convened by the Chief Judge of Edo State, was tasked with investigating allegations of misconduct and perjury against Shaibu.

During the plenary session on Monday, April 8, 2024, eighteen out of the twenty lawmakers in attendance voted in favor of the impeachment, with one dissenting vote.

The seven-man panel found the former Deputy Governor guilty of leaking government official secrets, though he was not found guilty of the allegation of perjury.

Following the impeachment proceedings, Governor Obaseki promptly administered the oath of office to Omobayo, who hails from Akoko-Edo Local Government Area in the Edo North Senatorial District, the same district as the impeached deputy governor.

Born on July 19, 1986, Omobayo is described as a โ€œseasoned engineer with a proven track record of progressive professional experience in the oil and gas sector.โ€ He holds a Bachelor of Engineering Degree in Electrical and Electronics Engineering, as well as an MSc in Public Administration from the University of Benin, UNIBEN.

Omobayo is a registered member of the Nigerian Society of Engineers (NSE) and the Council for the Regulation of Engineering in Nigeria (COREN). He has served as a Senior Maintenance Engineer at Dresser Wayne West Africa Limited, gaining valuable experience in operations within the South-South region.

Known for his active involvement in politics within his local government area, the new Deputy Governor is poised to bring his expertise and dedication to the service of the people of Edo State.
