Marvel’s forthcoming Blood Hunt event will see Spider-Man save Morbius from a vampire army, bringing “Morbin’ Time” to an end. This summer, Earth’s vampires rise, bringing to head years of planning. While the heroes have their hands busy stopping the undead, Spider-Man and a ragtag group of allies must find Morbius in Amazing Spider-Man: Blood Hunt #3, as he holds the key to stopping the vampires.
Marvel revealed more information about Amazing Spider-Man: Blood Hunt #3 in their July solicitations. Written by Justina Ireland and drawn by Marcelo Ferreira, the miniseries sees the Web-Slinger search the city for Morbius the Living Vampire. A renowned expert in bloodborne diseases, Morbius holds the key to curing the vampire plague sweeping Earth. Naturally, the vampires do not want this.
The solicitation reveals Spider-Man will be aided in his mission by the Lizard. In his civilian identity of Doctor Curt Conners, he is a genetics expert. The vampires could very well be after him too.
It is appropriate that Morbius is humanity’s last hope against the vampire hordes. Shortly after the Comics Code Authority was modified to allow vampires, werewolves and other such creatures, Marvel created Morbius, their first vampire character. However, vampires had been banned from comics for nearly 20 years, so Marvel was a little hesitant to create a full-on member of the undead. Instead, they created a “Living Vampire.” Morbius did not become a vampire through conventional means, such as being bitten. Morbius obtained his vampiric powers through an experiment designed to cure a fatal blood disease he had.
Over the course of 50 years, Morbius has become a cult favorite at Marvel. Morbius fights a continual battle against his bloodlust. Morbius is not a bad person, and tries to do what is right. However, his monstrous appearance, and need to drink blood, usually repels those he is trying to help. Morbius’ struggle against his vampire side has made for some dark and compelling stories. After years on the sidelines, Morbius became an internet phenomenon shortly after the release of his movie. Although panned by critics and fans, the film has still inspired numerous memes, namely “It’s Morbin’ Time.”
If Earth’s vampires have their way, then Morbin’ Time will be over for good. As an expert on blood-based conditions, Morbius is in a position to help cure those afflicted with vampirism. Those behind Blood Hunt see Morbius, rightfully, as a threat. Furthermore, Earth’s vampires do not see Morbius as one of their own, meaning they will have little hesitation in killing him. Vampires have been waiting for this moment for centuries, and Morbius will not rob them of their victory. Morbius will need Spider-Man’s help if the Earth is to survive Blood Hunt.
Amazing Spider-Man: Blood Hunt #3 is on sale July 17 from Marvel Comics!
