Rainstorm displaces 1,000 in Kogi community

No fewer than 1,000 people have been rendered homeless following a heavy rainstorm in Iyara community, the headquarters of the Ijumu Local Government Area of Kogi State.

Our correspondent gathered that the incident occurred on Monday night.

Speaking shortly after the unfortunate disaster, the Eleta Oluyara of Iyara, Oba Jacob Meduten, called on the government, well-to-do individuals, and corporate bodies to assist the victims to ameliorate their sufferings.

Meanwhile, the Kogi State Government has appealed to the people of the state to take precautions as the rainy season is fast approaching.

The Executive Secretary, State Emergency Management Agency, Mouktar Atimah, while confirming the incident in Iyara, said, โ€œWe received information that a natural disaster happened in Iyara, and immediately the office deployed personnel for an on-the-spot assessment. The local government chairman also contacted us, and we are partnering together to see how to reduce the suffering of the affected victims.

โ€œEverybody living in low-lying areas should move to higher ground. Kogites should be very careful about the way they roof their houses because if your houses are not properly roofed, the breeze can easily access the building.

He added, โ€œGovernor Ahmed Usman Ododo has set machinery in motion to send relief materials to the affected community to alleviate their sufferings.โ€
