A new look at David Corenswet’s Superman movie was revealed at this year’s CinemaCon, giving another glimpse of James Gunn’s DC Universe. Warner Bros. Discovery is starting over when it comes to running a cinematic universe based on DC Comics, with the help of Gunn and Peter Safran as the co-CEOs of DC Studios. One of the most highly anticipated installments in Chapter 1, “Gods and Monsters,” is the new Superman film, with Corenswet starring as the next cinematic portrayal of the DC icon.
While Gunn’s Superman movie is currently filming, the DC Universe reboot managed to sneak in a surprise at the ongoing CinemaCon event in Las Vegas, NV. During the Warner Bros. Discovery presentation attended by Screen Rant, a video of Gunn was shown in which he teased that the Superman cast will be at CinemaCon next year to hype up the “Summer of Superman,” while also revealing the movie logo in detail.
The Superman movie logo was described as being bright red and yellow, similar to the design revealed in the costume logo the director previously released. Further, Gunn said, “I can’t wait to be in Vegas with all of you next year as we kick off the Summer of Superman.”
When Gunn shared a first look at the new Superman logo back when filming began, it was definitely one of the most different versions of the S-shield for the general audience. However, Gunn used one of the more iconic iterations of the House of El symbol, which is pulled directly from Mark Waid and Alex Ross’s infamous Kingdom Come storyline. In the Elseworlds-storyline, Superman’s S-shield has a black background behind the symbol rather than the traditional red-and-yellow visuals.
The biggest difference with Gunn’s Superman movie logo compared to other versions of the Man of Steel is that the S-shield doesn’t make it look like a traditional version of the letter. However, the shape of the S is still apparent enough that it looks like a Superman symbol. This would also be the second time in live-action that DC has featured the Kingdom Come Superman logo, after it was adapted in Arrowverse’s Crisis on Infinite Earths crossover event with Brandon Routh’s incarnation of the character donning it.
While it would have been fun to see the Superman cast at CinemaCon, it would definitely have been too early since Gunn has stated that less than 20% of the movie has been filmed at this point. However, as they enter their “Summer of Superman” next year, it will be great to see the first DC Universe movie be spotlighted at one of the biggest movie events in the industry. But for now, time will tell when more details will emerge about Gunn’s Superman movie.
