The Masked Singer panelists have the chance to save a contestant via the Ding Dong Keep It On Bell, but this element of the reality show is not a hit with fans, according to a new poll on Reddit. When The Masked Singer debuted in 2019, original panelists Robin Thicke, Jenny McCarthy, Ken Jeong and Nicole Scherzinger did not have the ability to save any of the contestants. If a masked celebrity received the fewest number of votes, they would be eliminated. That all changed in The Masked Singer season 9 with the introduction of the Ding Dong Keep It On Bell.
The Masked Singer fans took to Reddit in recent days to respond to a poll (created by i_d_o_n_t_c_a_r_e1) that asked how they felt about the Ding Dong Keep It On Bell. Over 100 Reddit users voted, with the results sending a clear message.
The three options that fans could choose from were “I love it,” “I like it” and “I hate it,” with the latter choice coming away as the winner. A plurality of voters made it clear they dislike the Ding Dong Keep It On Bell. “I like it” came in at a close second place, with “I love it” at a very distant third. Combining the top two voter-getters reveals that The Masked Singer fans feel either unenthusiastic approval or a severe dislike of giving the panelists the ability to save a contestant. Only a small number of fans love this element of the reality show.
When The Masked Singer season 9 introduced the Ding Dong Keep It On Bell, the panelists used it a total of three times in its first year, since they had the ability to save one contestant in each group. Medusa, Gargoyle and Mantis were saved, and they were given the ability to return to the competition via the “Battle of the Saved” episode. Medusa went on to winThe Masked Singer season 9 and was unmasked as Bishop Briggs.
Gazelle, who turned out to be Janel Parrish, was saved by the panelists during The Masked Singer season 10 and went on to take third place. During the currently airing The Masked Singer season 11, the panelists (led by Rita) used the Ding Dong Keep It On Bell to save Poodle Moth on Shower Anthem Night. There was some online backlash when the panelists didn’t use their save on Lizard, who was revealed to be Sisqó.
Looking back over the five times the save has been used, the results have been mixed in terms of its relevancy. Medusa did end up winning, but the others did not. It’s too early to tell if Poodle Moth will win, but if she does, then maybe that will prove that it’s a good thing the panelists have this power. Other talent shows like American Idol have had a Judges’ Save, which always gets strong reactions online. Not everyone will be pleased with the results, but at the end of the day, that element of surprise makes for great TV.
