Starfield players disappointed with Bethesda’s lack of post-game support are in luck as one talented fan has created a mod that’s so massive it could serve as the RPG’s first major piece of DLC. While Bethesda may have promised more content for Starfield in the months after its release, the studio has remained surprisingly quiet when it comes to meaningful patches and the already-announced Shattered Space expansion. Fortunately, the game’s community is picking up the slack to make the sci-fi RPG even better with the help of some incredible mods like the “Galactic Colonies Expanse.”
Posted to Nexus Mods by Tank-girl444, the “Galactic Colonies Expanse” significantly builds upon the base-building mechanics already in Starfield and enables players to create entire colonies on discovered planets, loading them up with new buildings, resource generation systems, and even colonists. The mod intends to allow players to make “functional, rustic, and realistic-looking settlements” rather than single outposts dedicated solely to gathering materials. The amount of options included in the mod is staggering so it’s easy to see why the creator dubbed “Galactic Colonies Expanse” as DLC-sized.
The “Galactic Colonies Expanse” effectively turns Starfield into a city-building by adding a plethora of new structures that can be built and connected to one another to form a functional colony. Players will need to construct homes for citizens, power plants to give everyone power, and even factories to ensure the NPCs, which are transported in via colony ship, have somewhere to work, thus generating money and resources. All of this will need some defenses to hold off any attacks, so new combat equipment, including mechs, can be constructed to keep folks safe.
Perhaps most exciting for players wanting something a little more relaxing is the inclusion of farms that can be populated by 40 new plants. These crops can be grown and harvested to ultimately be consumed or solid for a profit, turning Starfield into a more sci-fi-oriented Stardew Valley. The best part is that the “Galactic Colonies Expanse” is just getting started and will serve as a bedrock for more updates that will further improve its functionality.
The release of such a massive mod will be met with praise by the Starfield community, which is growing increasingly concerned about the future of the game. Having released in late 2023, Bethesda has yet to offer up any meaningful content patches, instead focusing more on squashing bugs rather than addressing some of the more substantial quality-of-life problems that still plague it. Mods are an excellent way to bring some new variety to the galaxy but some kind of official update that doesn’t simply improve the game’s Photo Mode feels long overdue.
