In a move to accelerate primary healthcare revitalization to achieve universal health coverage and health security, the Cross River State Ministry of Health has announced plans to establish at least two functional primary healthcare (PHC) centres in each ward of the state.

The World Health Organisation expressed concern that disease and natural disasters are becoming the leading cause of death and disability as the world celebrates World Health Day 2024 with the theme “My Health, My Right.”.
The Commissioner for Health, Dr Henry Egbe Ayuk, has emphasised that the Cross River State Government is committed to leveraging universal healthcare coverage to meet the health needs of the people.
At a press conference organised to commemorate World Health Day 2024, the commissioner said there are currently 196 primary healthcare facilities in each political ward in the state, but the government is making more efforts to double this number before the end of this administration.
“In Cross River State, the leadership of His Excellency, Prince Bassey Otu, is making efforts to make sure that all LGAs have functional hospitals, as evidenced by the establishment of General Hospital Ikom. In addition, Cottage Hospital Oban and a few other hospitals are being renovated to meet the health needs of the citizens of the state.
“Equally primary health centres in the state are given a facelift in order to provide adequate and accessible health services in the state.
“Access to good quality health should not be seen as a privilege but one’s right; therefore, we will ensure that quality service delivery is maintained, he averred.
