The Rector of Abia State Polytechnic, Dr. Christopher Kalu Okoro has revealed that the prudent management of funds available to the institution has brought about the notable differences experienced in the school a few months after his appointment.
The Rector who took over the management of the institution, barely two months ago stated this during the 358th Academic Board meeting at the Polytechnic’s auditorium in Aba, Abia State.
In his speech, he revealed that he met the institution in a sorry state, but added that within the few months of his administration’s prudent utilization of available resources and the support and cooperation from staff members and management of the school, there has been significant difference in the campus.
He noted that the power supply in the institution has been restored by the Aba Power Company which will give about 18 hours of steady power supply to the campus.
According to him, this would save the management a huge amount of money from the purchase of diesel, maintenance of power generating sets among others
Okoro revealed that he would use the money saved from the purchase of diesel and maintenance of generating set to pay part time lecturers of the institution and also promised a review of the salary scheme of this set of lecturers to match the current economic realities in Nigeria.
He said, “I made a promise to God and the Governor of the state, Dr. Alex Chioma Otti that in shortest possible time, Abia State Polytechnic Aba under my watch will be among the five best Polytechnics in Nigeria.
“The changes you are seeing and witnessing around the school is because we are managing the little resources we have in the most judicious way.
“I plan to have the payment of the lecturers six months ahead of time so that their services won’t be stalled.
“As you can see, there is significant changes in the campus, the campus is now cleaner and neater because we engaged the services of cleaners to clear grasses, prune the lawns and clean classes.
“Cleanliness is next to goodliness and you can attest to the fact that the environment is more welcoming now from the gate and more efforts is underway to solidify on the gains achieved so far.”
