Before From Season 3s Return, See HBOs 10-Year-Old Mystery Show With 91% On Rotten Tomatoes

HBO has the perfect critically acclaimed mystery show to watch while waiting for From season 3’s return in the fall of 2024, with both having behind-the-scenes connections to another hit sci-fi series. MGM+ recently revealed From season 3’s release window as fall 2024, though the exact date has yet to be confirmed. The Harold Perrineau-led TV show is centered around a mysterious town in which those who enter become trapped, with their confinement made worse by horrifying creatures that emerge at night and secrets that the characters must slowly uncover.

Following the twist-filled ending of From season 2, the upcoming outing is highly anticipated, especially with notable praise from horror master Stephen King. The sci-fi horror series currently holds a 94% score on Rotten Tomatoes, making From one of the most promising sci-fi mystery shows of the last decade. With several months still remaining before more of the mysteries unfold in From season 3’s new episodes, a similar HBO TV show that ended in 2017 provides a thrilling substitute viewing while waiting, with this series also boasting substantial critical acclaim for its compelling mysteries, performances, and themes.

Also often described as one of the greatest TV shows of all time, HBO’s The Leftovers is another sci-fi/mystery drama series with a concept somewhat similar to From. Debuting on HBO in 2014, The Leftovers ended after three seasons as it followed groups of characters in the aftermath of a disastrous event known as the “Sudden Departure,” which saw 2% of Earth’s population inexplicably vanish on October 14, 2011. The first season followed the Garvey family, Nora Durst and her brother Matt, and members of the Guilty Remnant cult in a small New York town before moving the characters to Texas in season 2 and Australia in season 3.

Similar to From, HBO’s The Leftovers’ primary character was the town’s chief of police and dealt with themes of the supernatural, existential philosophies, mortality, and purpose, all of which center around an unexplained supernatural occurrence. However, The Leftovers and From’s similarities shouldn’t be too surprising, as they both come from creative minds behind the hit sci-fi mystery TV show Lost. The Leftovers was made by Lost co-creator and showrunner Damon Lindelof, while From is executive produced by Lost’s producers, director, and writer Jack Bender and Jeff Pinkner.

The Leftovers and From’s reviews have both surpassed Lost’s accumulated Rotten Tomatoes score. The overall score for Lost’s six seasons is 86% on Rotten Tomatoes, whereas From has a 94% score after its first two seasons and The Leftovers’ three-season score stands at 91% on the review aggregator site. However, it’s important to note that Lost’s first few seasons have exceptional scores, with the show’s overall rating being impacted by inconsistent scores in later seasons; while seasons 1, 2 and 5 are all between 92-100%, seasons 3, 4, and 6 range between 69-89% scores. As such, most of Lost’s seasons are more on par with From and The Leftovers’ reviews.
