The Abia State capital, Umuahia, witnessed a significant development today with the official commissioning of a new 3.5-kilometer, 6-lane road. The ceremony, held on Wednesday, was led by the governor, Dr. Alex Otti.
The 3.5 Km road was commissioned by His Excellency, Commodore Ebitu Ukiwe (Rtd), former Chief of General Staff of the Federal Republic of Nigeria and former Vice President of Nigeria under Military Head of State Ibrahim Babangida
This newly constructed highway, stretching from Okpara Square to Express Tower Roundabout, is expected to significantly improve traffic flow and reduce congestion within the city.
Speaking at the commissioning of the road, the Commissioner for Works, Engr. Otumchere Otti stated that the additional lanes will undoubtedly ease traffic movement and potentially reduce travel times.
During the commissioning ceremony, the governor also announced the renaming of another major Umuahia road. He disclosed that the iconic Ossah Road will henceforth be known as Aguiyi Ironsi Boulevard. This change honours Major General Johnson Thomas Umunnakwe Aguiyi-Ironsi, Nigeriaโs first military Head of State.
