In one of the most daring late-season twists in recent memory, what began as a noir detective series took an extraterrestrial turn with only a few episodes left to go. It was a bold move from creator Mark Protosevich, star Colin Farrell, and the rest of the filmmaking team, though one that refreshingly ensured the show could thrive as a dramatic thriller even without its unique twist.

In the clip, Sugar shares a touching moment with Margit (Anna Gunn) who reveals that she still has questions about who exactly the private investigator is. At the end of episode 6, audiences discovered that John Sugar is an alien, and episode 7 raised the stakes by revealing some humans know about their extraterrestrial guests. Although the dramatic approach to Sugar has not changed as a result of the series’ big twist, there are a number of ways that the truth about the character can play into the finale. A major one is the question of whether more people will learn Sugar’s true identity. With Margit questioning Sugar’s motives in the clip above, it’s possible that the truth of Sugar’s identity will be a recurring theme in the episode.
When editor Fernando Stutz explained the Sugar twist, he makes clear that the aliens in the series don’t typically feel emotions. This makes Henry’s (Jason Butler Harner) episode 7 statement, “the longer we stay here, the more human we become,” a foreboding notion when it comes to the season finale. Whatever comes Sugar’s way in Sugar episode 8, it’s likely that the character will react in a more reckless and flawed way than he may have at the beginning of the season. This could have dire consequences or point to a big rift between himself and his alien peers.
Another big reveal in Sugar episode 7 is that the aliens are about to leave Earth, with Sugar being encouraged to join them. The Sugar soundtrack pointed to this as early as episode 6, which ended with the song “Go Home” by Angel Olsen. Sugar will no doubt be faced with a choice in the season finale, and it will be interesting to see if he chooses to stick with the humans or vacate the planet with his peers. Either way, his decision will surely have big implications if a Sugar season 2 is made.
