THERE were several upsets in the President Federation Cup yesterday as Nigeria Premier Football League big guns Enyimba, Shooting Stars Sports Club, also known as 3SC, and Rivers United were among the clubs dumped out in the round of 16.
NPFL champions and arguably the biggest club in Nigeria, Enyimba, missed a second half penalty as they were beaten 1-0 by lower league side Sokoto United at the Abuja Goal Project.
Rivers United, who reached the quarter-finals of the CAF Confederation Cup this season, lost 1-0 to fellow NPFL club Sunshine Stars at the Abuja Area 3 Stadium.
Shooting Stars set the stage for the trio of upsets in Abuja as they lost 1-0 in the early kick off at the Goal Project to second-tier side El-Kanemi Warriors.
In other round of 16 results, Kano Pillars edged past Katsina United 8-7 on penalties after full-time ended 1-1, with Abia Warriors also overcoming Kwara United 4-3 on penalties.
The Lagos derby in Akure between Inter Lagos and Ikorodu City also went to penalties, with the former winning 5-4, while Kebbi United upset NPFL club Akwa United 1-0.
In the quarter-finals, El-Kanemi Warriors will face Inter Lagos, Abia Warriors will battle Sokoto United, Sunshine Stars are up against Kano Pillars and EFCC will confront Kebbi United.
