Today, the anticipated arraignment of former Aviation Minister Hadi Sirika on fresh charges was abruptly halted due to the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission’s (EFCC) failure to serve the defendants.
Sirika, along with his brother and a company, faces allegations of involvement in a N19.4 billion airport contract scam.
The prosecution, represented by Mr. Oluwaleke Atolagbe, informed the court of the EFCC’s inability to serve the charge to the defendants. As a result, the trial judge, Justice Suleiman Belgore, granted a short adjournment, setting the new date for May 23.
Notably, none of the defendants were present in court today.
Previously, Sirika, his daughter, and son-in-law secured N100 million bail each over alleged involvement in a phantom N2.7 billion Nigerian Air contract scam.
In the latest charge, the EFCC alleges that Sirika abused his ministerial position to benefit Enginos Nigeria Limited, owned by his brother Ahmad. The accusations include influencing contract awards for various projects, totaling over N5 billion.
The counts against Sirika include allegations of using his position to confer unfair advantages, possession of proceeds from criminal conduct, and violating anti-corruption laws.
