THE Presidential Compress Natural Gas Initiative (PCNGI), in partnership with Rolling Energy, has declared the commencement of the nationwide Mass Transit Conversion Program.
This announcement was made yesterday during the PCNGI launch of the conversion and refueling site in Ilorin.
According to a statement by the PCNGI, the aim of this initiative is to convert mass transit vehicles to cleaner energy sources, thereby significantly reducing emissions and promoting environmental sustainability.
The PCNGI, under the leadership of President Bola Tinubu, is dedicated to advancing clean energy solutions throughout Nigeria.
It also aims to lessen environmental impact and facilitate the transition to sustainable energy within the transportation sector through strategic collaborations and innovative projects.
The initial phase of the conversion program will be kickstarted in Lagos, Kwara, the Federal Capital Territory (FCT), and Rivers States, in collaboration with major transport unions such as the National Union of Road Transport Workers (NURTW), the Road Transport Employers’ Association of Nigeria (RTEAN), and the Nigerian Association of Road Transport Owners (NARTO).
To ensure the program’s success, the rollout will begin at eight of the designated conversion workshop sites, followed by key union partners observing the conversion process, evaluating it, and offering feedback as the initiative plans to expand operations to 15 states in the next 45 days.
The rollout will be supported by a 50% discount on equipment and kit costs, along with installation cost assistance provided to eligible union members.
PCNGI and Rolling Energy are committed to steering Nigeria towards a more sustainable future through the establishment of the Ilorin site and the nationwide conversion program, integral steps towards reducing the country’s carbon footprint and enhancing the efficiency of mass transit systems.
Interested individuals can visit specified locations in Lagos, Abuja, and Ilorin for conversion services.
This development follows the Presidency’s announcement of launching 2,700 CNG-powered buses and tricycles before President Tinubu’s one-year anniversary in office on May 29. The Federal Government aims to establish 100 conversion workshops and 60 refueling sites across 18 states by the end of 2024.
