Amidst strides to bolster Nigeria’s agricultural sector, Minister of Agriculture and Food Security, Abubakar Kyari, revealed a staggering N309 billion injection into the economy from recent harvests.
This disclosure, part of the ministry’s comprehensive update on achievements during President Bola Tinubu’s first year in office, underscores ongoing efforts to fortify the nation’s food and nutrition security.
Kyari’s report highlighted key initiatives including expansive wheat cultivation, rice distribution, and fortified crop programs aimed at combating food inflation and fostering sustainable agricultural development.
These initiatives include the launch of dry season farming with the cultivation of 118,657 hectares of wheat across 15 states, fostering year-round farming activities.
Additionally, the government has procured and distributed 58,500 metric tons of milled rice to all states and the Federal Capital Territory, as well as fortified crops with vitamin A micronutrient to improve nutrition content and health value.
To address persistent food inflation, the minister outlined measures such as distributing 60,432 metric tons of improved seeds, 887,255 metric tons of seedlings, and 62,328 metric tons of inorganic fertilizers and equipment to farmers across various value chains, aiming to boost production and stabilize prices.
