THE Federal Ministry of Education has decided to postpone the inauguration and retreat for pro-chancellors, chairmen, and members of governing councils of federal tertiary institutions.
This decision follows a directive from the federal government, which was prompted by a State House Press Release on May 23rd, 2024, requesting a comprehensive review of the nominees’ membership.
The inauguration and retreat, originally planned for May 30th and 31st, 2024, have now been rescheduled.
This was revealed in a statement signed by Folasade Boriowo, the Director (Press & PR) of the ministry, where he expressed regret for any inconvenience caused by this change.
Recall that the ministry had recently announced the names of nominees for chairmen, pro-chancellors, and council members of universities, polytechnics, and colleges of education.
However, concerns were raised about the lack of adherence to the principle of federal character in the nominations, with some states receiving only one nomination while others received multiple.
In response to public feedback, the Special Adviser to the President on Information and Strategy, Bayo Onanuga, stated that President Tinubu has ordered a complete review of the list to ensure compliance with the constitutional principle of federal character. The review will also aim to achieve national representation across the country.
Additionally, the Academic Staff Union of Universities (ASUU) in the Bauchi zone criticized the appointment of the nominees, suggesting that the previously dissolved members should be reinstated under the Bola Tinubu-led administration.
