While exploring the Adamantine Forge in Baldur’s Gate 3‘s Grymforge region, you may come across the Sentient Amulet. This amulet, which provides useful enhancements if equipped, might not initially seem conspicuous, but a rather sinister secret behind it causes you lots of trouble. However, the Sentient Amulet also involves the player in a secret quest that leads to helping the spirit of a cursed monk.
During Act 1, multiple ways exist to get to the Underdark in Baldur’s Gate 3. By following the main quest, you will find yourself in the Goblin Camp, and delving deeper into its depths will lead you to the Shattered Sanctum, where one of the entrances to the Underdark is tucked away. This is a challenging location to explore, and you must ensure your party is of a high enough level to handle what awaits them.
The Sentient Amulet is found within the Adamantine Forge in Baldur’s Gate 3. It is located in the southeastern corner of the Ancient Forge region of the Underdark. To reach this area, travel to Grymforge by heading to the Underdark Beach Waypoint near the coast of Decrepit Village, then take the boat floating on the shoreline.
Upon clearing through Grymforge and descending the broken staircase to the forge, take an immediate right from the platform and jump over to find several broken rocky platforms in a pool of bubbling lava. The Sentient Amulet is a locked chest on the largest platforms towards the back of this area, at coordinates -624, 224. GRIFFIN offers a visual walkthrough detailing the precise directions to find the chest in this precarious area.
The surrounding lava is particularly hazardous, as it’s extremely volatile and will significantly damage you and your party. To make exploring this terrain more manageable, you should beat the Lava Elemental that roams this area. This stops the lava from erupting, making it much easier to cross.
Since the chest containing the Sentient Amulet is locked, you can pick the lock if you have enough skill in Sleight of Hand. This requires a Dexterity skill check of 20 or more, so utilizing a Rogue in Baldur’s Gate 3 may make this process easier. Alternatively, you can loot a nearby skeleton for the key. Before opening the chest, be aware of the consequences before picking up the Sentient Amulet.
Once you pick up the Sentient Amulet, the spirit of the Cursed Monk suddenly appears, overcome with laughter. You must pass a Wisdom check to ensure your character doesn’t get carried away with the urge to laugh. Doing so is imperative; otherwise, you will fall victim to the same curse as the monk.
If you resist, you can speak to the spirit and ask it more questions through dialogue options. Use Insight to uncover that the spirit’s intentions aren’t hostile, or use Investigation to examine the amulet more closely. Those who don’t have these special skill checks should get their best companion in Baldur’s Gate 3 to speak with the spirit.
The monk’s spirit will ask you to deliver the Sentient Amulet to his granddaughter at Wyrm’s Crossing. As you won’t be able to grant the monk’s request until they visit Baldur’s Gate in Act 3, you can opt to equip the amulet in the meantime, which grants you the Shatter spell, Ki Restoration, and the chance to converse with the spirit. This would be a useful accessory for a Monk build in BG3.
This proves extremely detrimental, but it may be worth it for its abilities. Alternatively, you could stow it in your inventory or toss it aside. Players should proceed with caution when deciding whether to help the laughing monk or keep the amulet. By progressing through the quest, the monk will ask that you accept his madness, bestowing you with Tasha’s Hideous Laughter, available once per Long Rest without expending a spell slot.
By refusing his offer, he will become hostile and attack players. Defeating the spirit will result in the amulet being upgraded instead, removing the High Spirits condition and adding more damage output to its powerful abilities. While using the amulet in Baldur’s Gate 3 comes with a few risks, it is important to consider that the rewards may be worth the cost.
