Jerry Seinfeld is most prominently known for the iconic sitcom Seinfeld, although his later movie career shows that he has moved beyond the realm of TV. Despite this, the actor and comedian still loves putting references to his beloved series, with one Seinfeld nod being a fantastic choice to include in his new Netflix film.
Jerry Seinfeld’s Unfrosted: The Pop-Tart Story is finally here, with the highly anticipated comedy now available to watch on Netflix. Unfrosted: The Pop-Tart Story tells the not-so-true origin story of Kellogg’s titular breakfast product, with it focusing on celebrity cameos, gags, and appearances from food and breakfast cereal mascots rather than the actual truth. Because of this, Seinfeld is able to sneak in some neat Easter eggs, including one to his famous TV series.
Many of the characters in Unfrosted: The Pop-Tart Story are completely fictional, including the character Max Greenfield plays. In the film, Greenfield plays a fictional Post employee named Rick Ludwin, one of the supporting antagonists. As it turns out, however, this name may be a nod to Seinfeld, as Rick Ludwin is also the name of an NBC executive who had a huge role in saving Seinfeld.
Upon the Seinfeld pilot being pitched to NBC, many executives wanted to pass on the show due to its niche subject and poor test audience ratings. However, Ludwin strongly believed in the show, pushing for NBC to carry it and personally financing four more episodes. This led to the eventual creation of Seinfeld, with Ludwin’s role in season 1 being integral to the show getting made (via The New York Times). Since Jerry Seinfeld wrote Unfrosted: The Pop-Tart Story, it is unlikely that this name choice was accidental.
Jerry Seinfeld’s nod to Rick Ludwin in Unfrosted: The Pop-Tart Story is great, and it is made even more special after his other recent Seinfeld reunion. Jerry Seinfeld reunited with Larry David in the Curb Your Enthusiasm finale, which recreated the Seinfeld finale. The storyline is almost exactly the same, with many of the jokes highlighting the connection between the endings of the two shows.
Both of these Jerry Seinfeld moments show that the actor is attempting to honor the legacy of Seinfeld and those who made the show possible. Seinfeld’s friendship with Rick Ludwin and Larry Davis proves his appreciation for the two creatives, which is why the Unfrosted: The Pop-Tart Story Seinfeld Easter egg is so great.
