NIGERIA’S electricity production surged to 5,000 Mega Watts, in May 2024,marking a substantial progression from previous levels.
This milestone was revealed by the Minister of Power, Adebayo Adelabu, during the second day of the ministerial sectoral update in Abuja for the current administration.
Adelabu emphasized that this accomplishment underscores the government’s dedication to enhancing the country’s power infrastructure which aligns with President Bola Tinubu’s vision for reliable and sustainable energy under the renewed hope agenda.
The increased power generation is anticipated to tackle issues like frequent power outages and inadequate capacity, thereby stabilizing the grid and diminishing dependence on generators.
In April, the Minister had indicated that the Federal Government aimed to increase power output to 6,000 Mega Watts by the end of 2024 from the 4,000 MW baseline.
Expressing concerns about heavy reliance on the national grid, Adelabu outlined a target transmission capacity of 10-12,000 over the next three years.
The administration led by Tinubu is resolute in breaking the longstanding 4,000 MW barrier, prevalent for many years prior to Adelabu’s appointment as the 47th Minister of Power.
Nigeria has witnessed several national power grid collapses in recent times, with the Transmission Company of Nigeria (TCN) reporting six of such occurrences in 2024.
An acute shortage of gas for power generation and vandalism of power infrastructure are cited as the primary causes responsible for the recurrent grid failures in the country.
