YUNUSA Tanko has stated that Peter Obi will only engage in a merger aimed at improving Nigeria’s conditions rather than solely pursuing power.
Speculations have emerged regarding a potential coalition involving Obi and other political figures to challenge the ruling All Progressives Congress (APC) shortly after the 2023 presidential election, where the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) declared Tinubu the winner.
Tanko, serving as the Chief Spokesperson of Obi-Datti and Director of the Media for the Labour Party (LP), emphasized that Obi prioritizes a merger focused on uplifting Nigeria, encompassing areas such as poverty alleviation, enhanced healthcare, access to clean water, and resolving power supply issues.
He stated this during yesterdays’ episode of Channels Television’s Politics Today.
According to Tanko, Peter Gregory is inclined towards a merger founded on shared ideologies and a constructive agenda rather than one driven solely by power motives.
Tanko emphasized that any potential alliance involving Obi would undergo thorough evaluation to ensure alignment of values.
A few weeks back, Obi had discussions with Atiku of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) regarding national concerns, sparking rumors of a collaboration between them.
Despite these interactions, former House of Representatives member Tajudeen Yusuf expressed skepticism about the likelihood of a merger between the former Anambra governor and Atiku based on their prior collaboration in 2019.
“They have worked together before in 2019. It would not be out of place if they work together again. I am not in their minds but I don’t see the possibility,” he said.
Yusuf highlighted Atiku’s intention to persist in contesting presidential elections and suggested a scenario where both individuals might run independently in the 2027 poll rather than forming a coalition. This perspective makes the prospect of a merger between Obi and Atiku less plausible.
