Xbox Game Pass already has a stacked May but the month is about to become even stronger thanks to the addition of one of the most underrated shooters released in 2023. While many subscribers are no doubt looking forward to the highly-anticipated release of Senua’s Saga: Hellblade 2, the latest game from Ninja Theory and Xbox Game Studios, those wanting some more explosive action may want to look elsewhere. Fortunately, one fantasy-themed shooter that’s loaded with style, polish, and action should be exactly what’s needed to balance out such an emotional experience.
Per the official Xbox blog, users will be able to play Immortals of Aveum, the fantasy-themed first-person shooter developed by Ascendant Studios and published by EA Games, on May 21. While it recieved great reviews at launch for its compelling campaign, tight combat, and gorgeous presentation, the game tragically didn’t manage to break into the mainstream due to launching in a window that was populated by many other solid releases. Its addition to Xbox Game Pass as an extension of EA Play is the perfect opportunity for those who missed it to see what all the critics adored about blasting enemies away.
The premise of Immortals of Aveum is simple but nonetheless captivating as its set in a fantastical land that’s dominated by magic as several factions battle constantly to channel these arcane elements to destroy their enemies. Players take on the role of Jak, a battlemage who joins the Immortals, an order of elite magic-users that must unite to stand against the invading force of Rasharn and protect the land of Lucium in what is titled the Everwar. Players have access to over 25 unique spells that are either offensive or defensive, and progression is tracked through an 80-node upgrade tree.
At launch, Immortals of Aveum was criticzed for its technical issues, a problem that was subsequently fixed thanks to post-launch updates and patches. Unfortunately, due to its unfortunate release date and lackluster marketing campaign, the game failed to generate its targeted revenue, prompting Ascendant Studios to lay off over half of its active staff. It’s a pity given that players who can overlook some its more limited features will likely enjoy its explosive action and flashy combat.
Immortals of Aveum isn’t the only title to arrive on Xbox Game Pass in the latter half of May. Aside from the aforementioned Senua’s Saga: Hellblade 2, subscribers can also look forward to the excellent co-op game Moving Out 2 and the thought-provoking puzzle game Humanity. If those don’t do the trick, users could also put their skills to the test in the intense soulslike RPG Lords of the Fallen.
