In his manga, Spy x Family, Tatsuya Endo introduced audiences all around the world to a cast of cheerful, intriguing, and loveable characters. While fans have virtually no complaints about most of the cast, there is a character who has reportedly made fans feel a bit uncomfortable, Yuri Briar. Yor’s younger brother has been seen displaying an almost obsessive level of affection towards his sister.
These criticisms against Yuri’s behavior could soon be addressed, thanks to a lesser-known character named Chloe. This secret police agent used to be Yuri’s classmate during his time at college and had displayed signs of feeling attracted to the young man. A relationship between Chloe and Yuri could help the latter let go of his intense attachment to his sister, starting a new life with his former classmate.
Ever since he was first introduced in chapter 10 of the Spy x Family manga, Yuri Briar has been one of the franchise’s most popular characters. Whenever he makes an appearance, fans know that either a hilarious or action-packed moment is about to occur. Nonetheless, while Yuri is responsible for some of the funniest moments in Spy x Family, he can also create an uncomfortable atmosphere. He is devoted to his sister, to the point that it can be questioned if his love for her goes beyond brotherly affection. For example, in chapter 11, Yuri appears to be extremely jealous of Loid’s relationship with Yor.
He went as far as to try to prevent his sister from kissing his husband, resulting in Yuri getting slapped by an embarrassed Yor. Yuri has continued exhibiting similar behavior ever since, which has caused a large portion of the fandom to criticize his character. Yet, Chloe could become the key to solving Yuri’s unhealthy attachments and making his behavior less inappropriate. After her introduction in chapter 80, Chloe has become a constant companion for Yuri, helping him during most of his missions. She has made it clear that she feels a great deal of admiration for the young man.
During chapter 89 of the Spy x Family manga, fans could see Yuri and Chloe interact while not on a mission. The young woman revealed that she met Yuri several years in the past when they both attended university. Yor’s brother was just a teenager at the time, having skipped several courses due to his high intellect. As soon as Chloe met Yuri, she felt an interest in the young man, trying constantly to get Yor’s brother to socialize with the rest of the class. This interest resurfaced once they became members of Ostania’s Secret Police force.
Chloe cares deeply for Yuri, often trying to make him smile and teasing him about his love for Yor. When Yuri entered an enemy hideout alone, putting his life at risk, Chloe became enraged, slapping her coworker. She claimed that Yuri could not keep endangering himself since he had people who cared about him. Despite the insistence that she meant Yor, it was implied that Chloe tried to let Yuri know about her potential feelings for him. The young woman’s words seemingly reached Yuri, although his thoughts quickly focused on Yor once more.
Just like Yor’s jealousy is holding back her character development, Yuri’s obsession with his sister is hindering an otherwise interesting and entertaining character. In future chapters of the manga, Chloe and Yuri’s relationship could be further developed, allowing Yuri to get over his biggest flaw, which is surely going to be well-received among Spy x Family fans.
