PlayStation Plus subscribers can prepare themselves for The Last of Us‘ second season with the subscription’s latest free trial. As well as offering a roster of several full games to download and stream from across several PlayStation consoles’ libraries, the Premium tier of PlayStation Plus also grants access to 2-hour long timed trials of some newer AAA offerings, such as Marvel’s Spider-Man 2, Alan Wake 2, God of War Ragnarök and more and players can carry over their progress – including trophies – to the main game if they choose to purchase it afterward.
This month, PlayStation Plus Premium subscribers can also access a free trial of The Last of Us Part 2 Remastered, as advertised by the official PlayStation account on X. Within the trial’s time limit, players can experience the opening 2 hours of the game’s storyline, or dive into some of the new modes exclusive to the remaster such as the new roguelike survival mode, No Return.
For fans of The Last of Us‘ critically acclaimed HBO adaptation, this free trial comes at the perfect time, as the show has begun filming in February 2024, and is set to run until August, targeting a 2025 release date. Previous reports from the showrunners Craig Mazin and Neil Druckmann stated that unlike the first game, which was covered entirely within the first season of the show with some changes to bring it to television, The Last of Us Part 2 will be split across multiple seasons due to how big it was.
Despite receiving huge critical acclaim and winning many awards upon its initial release, The Last of Us Part 2‘s story was no stranger to controversy, so many are intrigued as to how the TV show will adapt it, and if telling the story across two seasons will change how it is laid out narratively to keep specific characters around for longer, or build up others’ backstories sooner. Major roles from the second game have been cast, such as Abby, who is played by Kaitlyn Dever, and Dina, who is portrayed by Isabela Merced and has recently been seen on set with Bella Ramsey, who reprises the role of Ellie from the first season.
Those using the free trial to dive into The Last of Us Part 2‘s story will certainly come across one of the title’s more controversial moments, which is a major catalyst for the game’s main narrative. Therefore, for those who haven’t played the games before and want to go into Season 2 blind, it might be worth sticking to the game’s No Return mode instead, as this doesn’t include story spoilers and is still worth playing as it showcases some of the game’s combat – which was superior to the first game – across several intense runs, with four major objectives offering plenty of variety within those two hours.
