Rey Skywalker took on the iconic family name of her master at the end of Star Wars: The Rise of Skywalker, and a new piece of merchandise gave more insight into her decision. The members of the Skywalker family tree were some of the most important people in the entire galaxy, and Rey proved that there was more to the name than just inheritance. She’ll also get a chance to prove herself as a Skywalker even further in New Jedi Order, the upcoming Star Wars movie. While Rey is looking to the future of Star Wars, a new voice line proves she’s also reexamining her past choices.
A video from Nick Tierce used a Jedi holocron and kyber crystal from Star Wars: Galaxy’s Edge, the canon theme park, to play messages from Rey. They cycle through several different quotes from her, ranging from simple voice lines to lore-rich explanations, and one such explanation gives deeper insight into why she took on the Skywalker family name as her own.
As she explained in the holocron’s voice message, Rey became a Skywalker to show her respect for the people who made her who she is, namely Luke Skywalker, Leia Organa, and Ben Solo.
The Skywalker name has a huge legacy in its own right, but Rey’s decision to carry it forward into the future with her ensured that it would continue to have an impact on the galaxy far, far away.
After Ben sacrificed himself at the end of The Rise of Skywalker, the legendary family name seemed to have died with him. If that had been the case, its legacy of being a symbol of hope and all that was good in the galaxy would have died with him. Because Rey took the Skywalker name as her own, the name gets to live on and continues to inspire the galaxy. The people of the galaxy will now be able to rally around another Skywalker in Rey, just like they did around Anakin, Luke, and Leia.
Rey isn’t just bringing the name itself into the future, though, she’s also bringing the memories of her dearly missed friends with her. By bearing the Skywalker name, Rey is ensuring that all the Skywalkers before her won’t be forgotten. Rey is already the most important person in the galaxy, and her notoriety seems like it will only grow in New Jedi Order. When the people of the galaxy speak about her, the name Skywalker will also pass their lips, bringing the legendary Jedi well into the future.
The fact that Rey took the Skywalker name also means she gets to extend its legacy through her own actions. In New Jedi Order, Rey will be rebuilding the Jedi Order, and she’ll be looking to correct the mistakes of the past. While the Skywalkers are known for being heroes of the galaxy, they also spawned both Darth Vader and Kylo Ren. Rey can be the Skywalker who finally fixes the mistakes that caused both of their falls, which would not only continue their legacy, but strengthen it. The Skywalkers aren’t done with Star Wars yet, and Rey Skywalker is making sure of it.
