The new trailer for The Shrouds gives a look at David Cronenberg’s new horror film. A master of body horror, Cronenberg is best known for his work on films such as The Fly and Dead Ringers, and, more recently, Crimes of the Future. The Shrouds is an upcoming Cronenberg horror-thriller that features the story of a grieving widower named Karsh who builds a device that makes him about to connect with the dead inside a burial shroud.
Now, the first teaser for The Shrouds has been released by The Demented Eduardo Roza.
The trailer begins by establishing Karsh as a lonely, grieving man who laments that “it’s been decades since [he] had to seduce a woman,” referencing the recent death of his wife. Karsh and another character then visit a burial site wherein they discover a tracking device that might link the protagonist to Becca, his fallen wife. Karsh is then sent on a mission to discover the secrets of this technology.
The Shrouds trailer already gives a glimpse at what looks to be an incredible performance from Vicnent Cassel. Even in this brief glimpse, Cassel’s character is shown to be determined, grieving, and intelligent, leading him on a fascinating quest. Cassel is a veteran but underrated actor, so The Shrouds will be a good chance for him to shine in the lead role. The Shrouds also features a supporting cast including Diane Kruger, Guy Pearce, Sandrine Holt, Ingvar Sigurdsson, and Al Sapienza.
The Shrouds trailer largely focused on the psychological element to the film, staying inside Karsh’s sadness and grief. Knowing the genre and knowing Cronenberg’s work, however, The Shrouds will also likely include grisly images of the dead amongst its plot. The auteur’s previous film, Crimes of the Future, included some of the most grotesque and visceral body horror in years. Some praised this film as one of the most creative in years, while others walked out of its premiere.
Like Crimes of the Future, The Shrouds is also set to premiere at Cannes. The French festival is known for its divisive reactions — from extended standing ovations to walk outs — so the initial reactions to The Shrouds will likely be vibrant ones. The teaser may be deceptive to some if The Shrouds ends up featuring as much body horror as Cronenberg’s other films. Hopefully, the strong performances and interesting premise can propel The Shrouds into an interesting Cannes premiere.
