The UNESCO Institute for African Culture and International Understanding (IACIU) has stressed the need for tailored training programmes to equip artisans in Nigeria with the necessary digital skills to thrive in an increasingly interconnected world.
The director of the institute, Professor Emeritus Peter Okebukola, disclosed this in a speech delivered at a workshop organised by IACIU at the Olusegun Obasanjo Presidential Library (OOPL), Abeokuta, Ogun State. The theme of the event was “Fostering Cultural Prosperity: Empowering Artists Through Technology-Driven Commerce.”
The workshop highlighted the pivotal role technology can play in revitalising and preserving cultural heritage while providing economic opportunities for artisans.
Prof. Okebukola noted that artisans now have unprecedented access to global markets with the advent of digital platforms and e-commerce, stressing that the platforms will give them the opportunity to showcase their unique crafts to a broader audience.
He said, “Technology alone is not enough. We must also provide the necessary support and resources to empower artisans to leverage these tools effectively.
“This includes access to training programmes, financial assistance, and guidance on navigating the complexities of online commerce.
“By equipping artisans with the skills and knowledge they need, we can ensure that they not only survive but thrive in the digital age.
“With the advent of digital platforms and e-commerce, artisans now have unprecedented access to global markets, allowing them to showcase their unique crafts to a broader audience.”
The facilitator of the programme, Sunday Akinrotimi, further pointed out various aspects of technology-driven commerce, including digital marketing strategies, e-commerce platforms, and the use of social media to promote artisanal products.
“By harnessing the power of technology, artisans can preserve traditional crafts, create sustainable livelihoods, and contribute to the cultural richness of communities worldwide.
“As the world continues to embrace digital innovation, initiatives like these are essential for ensuring that traditional craftsmanship remains vibrant and relevant in the digital age,” Akinrotimi said.
Participants at the workshop exchanged insights and best practices, paving the way for collaborative efforts to support artisans in leveraging technology effectively.
