The Abia State House of Assembly, under the leadership of Speaker Hon. Emmanuel Emuruwa, is commemorating its first year in office with a focus on refining its working strategies to further improve the state’s economic, business, and healthcare sectors.
Speaker Emuruwa commended the assembly members for their dedication during a press conference held on Thursday.
“Tomorrow, the Abia State House of Assembly will be celebrating its first year in office. We are glad to have reached this milestone despite the tough times in office.
“I would also like to commend every member of the house for their efforts so far in ensuring that the legislative activities of the state have been a success.
“Over the past year, the house has received 46 petitions and considered 55 motions. Additionally, 15 bills have been raised, and the house has ensured that 5 of these bills are passed into law after careful review.
“Overall, the house has seen to 40 resolutions within this year, including addressing inter-community and local government conflicts, infrastructure issues, and health,” he stated.
Emuruwa also announced a proposed three-day workshop in Uyo to develop collaborative strategies with the executive branch for efficient implementation of future laws and policies.
According to the speaker, the bills passed into law include the Abia State 2023 Appropriation and Appointment Law, the Greater Aba Development Authority (GADA) bill passed into law on the 8th of December 2023, the Medicine and Health Commodities Management Agency Bill passed into law on the 4th of April 2024, the Abia State Dig-Once-Policy enacted into law on the 2nd of May 2024, and the Abia State Governors and Deputy Governors (Repeal) Bill 2024 passed into law on the 20th of March 2024 to stop pensions for ex-governors and deputies.
Deputy Speaker, Rt. Hon. Okezie Augustine Nmeregini and Majority Leader, Hon. Uchenna Kalu also commended the House’s efforts, noting that all petitions presented have been given a fair hearing and resolved appropriately.
