THE world record holder in 100m hurdles, Tobi Amusan, has steered the Nigerian women’s team to the gold medal at the African Athletics Championship in Douala, Cameroon.
Amusan anchored Team Nigeria to gold last night in 42.76 seconds, with Justina Eyakpobeyan, Tima Godbless and Olayinka Olajide completing the quartet as they prepared for next month’s Olympic Games in Paris, France.
It is the third straight time the Nigerian women have won gold in the 4x100m since 2018 and Amusan has been involved in all three races.
Meanwhile, the quartet of Kanyinsola Ajayi, Usheoritse Itsekiri, Alaba Akintola and Godson Brume finished second in the men’s 4x100m final, losing gold to fierce rivals Ghana.
Ghana won the final in a time of 38.46s, with Rasheed Saminu anchoring.
Earlier in the championship, Ese Brume won gold in women’s long jump for Nigeria with her final attempt.
The Olympic medallist and Commonwealth Games champion was in second place behind Marthe Koala who was leading with 6.72m after five attempts.
Brume then produced a final round jump of 6.73m to claim the gold medal and sustain her eight-year winning streak in the competition.
