The ongoing Emirship tussle in Kano state has continued as reinstated Emir Muhammad Sanusi II defied a police ban to conduct a mini durbar.
The event followed the Eid el-Kabir prayers, which saw the two rival emirs leading separate prayers Sunday.
Emir Sanusi II led the Eid prayers at the Kofar Mata Juma’at Mosque, alongside Governor Abba Kabir Yusuf, due to the rainy weather, while Emir Aminu Ado Bayero conducted his prayers at the Nassarawa Mini Palace Mosque.
Despite an announcement by the Kano State Police Command banning durbar activities, Emir Sanusi II proceeded to Gidan Shettima Palace at Kofar Kwaru, where he held a mini durbar. This act of defiance underscores the tension surrounding the Emirship dispute.
After the prayers, Governor Yusuf, who prayed behind Emir Sanusi II, called for peace and calm among Kano residents. He urged them to continue their daily activities lawfully, and emphasized the importance of maintaining harmony in the state.
Governor Yusuf, however, stated that the police had not consulted him before implementing the ban on durbar activities, and highlighted a lack of coordination between state authorities.
Meanwhile, Ahmad Yakasai, a former commissioner in Kano state who prayed with Emir Bayero, expressed gratitude for the prevailing peace despite the ongoing conflict over the Emirship.
