NPFL: Rangers crowned as Remo Stars, Enyimba clinch CAF tickets, Sporting Lagos go down

REMO Stars and Enyimba earned spots in CAF competitions today while Sporting Lagos were relegated following final day action in the Nigeria Premier Football League.

Champions Enugu Rangers were crowned in Jos after a 2-1 victory over relegated Gombe United took their points tally to 70, while Shooting Stars Sports Club (3SC) finished fourth after beating Sporting Lagos 1-0 in Ibadan.

Remo Stars will be joining Rangers in the CAF Champions League after finishing second with 65 points following a 2-1 home win over Katsina United today.

Super Eagles right-back Sodiq Ismail and Dayo Ojo struck for Remo Stars in the first half while Michael Okoro Ibe netted for the visitors with 14 minutes left on the clock.

Last season’s champions Enyimba finished third with 63 points and will be campaigning in the CAF Confederation Cup next season.

They ended their season with a 2-0 home win over Plateau United in Aba with two late goals. League top scorer Chijioke Mbaoma got them ahead in the 78th minute and Alade Balogun sealed the win two minutes from time.

Christian Pyagbara scored seven minutes before half-time to keep 3SC in fourth place with 62 points and seal Sporting Lagos’ fate.

The Lagos side will return to the second-tier Nigeria National League after finishing 17th with 46 points, three points behind Akwa United (who beat Rivers United 3-1 today) in the safe zone.

Sporting Lagos will be going down alongside Doma United (45 points), Heartland (38 points) and Gombe United (25 points).
