The death toll from the May 2024 attack on worshippers by 38-year-old Shafi’u Abubakar at a mosque in Larabar Abasawa community, Gezawa Local Government Area of Kano, has risen.
The current number now is 23, with only two survivors. According to a report by Daily Trust whose correspondent visited the Murtala Muhammad Specialist Hospital where the victims were treated, 22 of the 24 admitted patients had died. Additionally, one victim taken to Aminu Kano Teaching Hospital also succumbed to injuries, bringing the total number of deaths to 23. Two people survived the attack, with one still recovering in the hospital and the other discharged and back home.
The tragic incident occurred when Abubakar allegedly sprayed the mosque with petrol, locked the door, and set it on fire during the morning Subhi prayers, trapping over 30 worshippers inside. Abubakar has been arraigned before an Upper Shariah Court, presided over by Halhalatu Zakariya, and has been remanded in a correctional facility.
