THE Rivers State Commissioner of Police, Olatunji Disu, has reassured the state’s residents that he and his officers will not allow the crisis affecting the Local Government Areas (LGAs) from escalating into a breakdown of law and order.
Speaking to reporters at the police headquarters in Port Harcourt today, CP Disu acknowledged the challenges in various LGAs and urged the political stakeholders to abide by the plea for peace and refrain from hostilities until their case is heard and resolved.
He cautioned that the police are prepared to safeguard the different council headquarters and will not permit any disruptions to the state’s tranquility.
On another note, the Local Government Chairman of Emohua in Rivers State, Chidi Lloyd, who has vowed to remain in office beyond his term ending on June 17, has unveiled an initiative to empower the residents of his locality.
In a statement released by his media aide, Bright Jossy, Lloyd, a lawyer and former member of the Rivers State House of Assembly involved in a controversy in 2015, disclosed plans to provide machetes and other agricultural tools to support farming activities in the region.
He mentioned that the distribution of these tools aligns with President Bola Tinubu’s Renewed Hope Agenda, aimed at boosting agriculture and ensuring food security.
Lloyd specified that the distribution of the farming tools would take place tomorrow for farmers in wards 1 to 7, while those in wards 8 to 14 will receive theirs on Wednesday, June 19.
This move by Lloyd comes at a time when the tenure of the Local Government Chairmen is expected to conclude by midnight on Friday.
Despite facing unfavorable court rulings, Lloyd, formerly aligned with ex-Governor Rotimi Amaechi and now supporting former Governor Nyesom Wike, is among the Council Chairmen refusing to vacate their positions.
