THE management of Rivers State University, Nkpolu-Oroworukwo, Port Harcourt, in Rivers State, have imposed a one-academic session suspension on four students for attacking a fellow 300-level student, Victor Tobin.
According to a statement from the Acting Registrar, I.B. Harry, today, the decision was reached during a meeting yesterday.
The students facing suspension are Monsi Baridukaka Nwaaelibabari from Mechanical Engineering, Victor Chibuike Daniel from Animal Science, Ezems Ikechukwu Goodluck from Electrical Engineering, and Wilson Jacob Ree-Ugani from Marine Engineering.
These students, members of the Man O’ War campus security group, allegedly attacked Victor Tobin, a Sociology student, on June 12, 2024, at Hostel F on the university campus.
The university has deemed the students’ actions as violations of regulations, leading to their suspension.
The Acting Registrar urged the student body to maintain peace, follow all university rules, and regulations.
Amidst this, students protested the treatment of their colleague by Man O’ War officials, gathering at the Man O’ War office to demand explanations and advocate for the disbanding of the campus security group.
The incident reportedly began when Tobin walked near the Man O’ War office, leading to a violent reaction from the members.
Despite Tobin’s inquiries on what his offense was, he was allegedly assaulted, resulting in injuries under his right eye.
The news spread quickly, prompting protests against the alleged abuse by the Man O’ War personnel on campus.
When approached for comment on potential arrests related to the incident, the Rivers State Police Command Public Relations Officer, Grace Iringe-Koko revealed that the matter had not been reported to the police, indicating that the university was handling the issue internally.
