BAFANA Bafana head coach Hugo Broos has said that he is pleased that the South African Football Association will charter a plane for the team to Nigeria for Friday’s 2026 World Cup qualifier against the Super Eagles.
South Africa will face Nigeria on Friday night in Uyo and then host Zimbabwe four days later in Bloemfontein.
“It is very important that we are travelling by charter,” Broos said.
“You can spend two days travelling (on a commercial airline). You leave on Wednesday and arrive on Thursday night, it’s terrible.
“We did it two years ago against Ethiopia; we won here against Ethiopia, but we ran after the ball, we didn’t touch the ball and we won it. But we could have lost that game because the players were exhausted.
“We could not repeat that again and SAFA did a very big effort to have that charter. I’m very happy with it. So now we will fly to Lagos, from Lagos to Uyo, done.
“OK, the flight will not be two or three hours, but it’s only Lagos and we are finished. This is what I wanted and again, I’m very happy that we could achieve it.”
Bafana Bafana and the Super Eagles are in dire need of good results after struggling in their first two matches of the qualifying campaign in November.
While South Africa are second in African qualifying Group C after a victory over Benin Republic and defeat to leaders Rwanda, Nigeria are third following disappointing draws against Lesotho and Zimbabwe.
The Super Eagles will fly out to Abijdan, Cote d’Ivoire to face Benin Republic on Monday, three days after the South Africa clash at the Godswill Akpabio Stadium in Uyo.
