Adeyanju Commends IGP Over Fresh Investigation Into Killing Of Erasmus In Police Custody

Human rights lawyer and activist, Deji Adeyanju, has commended the Inspector General of Police (IGP), Kayode Egbetokun, for ordering a fresh investigation into the death of Erasmus Emhenya, who allegedly died from police torture in April.

In a letter to the IGP, Deji praised the move as a step towards restoring public confidence in the police.

The IGP had on Wednesday, ordered a fresh investigation into the circumstances surrounding the death of a suspect, at the Nyanya Divisional Headquarters, Federal Capital Territory, FCT Abuja.

Erasmusโ€™s mother had accused the police of torturing her son to death while in police custody, a claim the FCT police command denied, insisting that an autopsy had been conducted, which did not indicate any form of torture.

Adeyanju urged the IGP to ensure a thorough and uncompromised investigation, conducted with utmost integrity and transparency.

โ€œYour devotion to a transparent investigation in this case is highly commendable and demonstrates a commitment to justice that deserves recognition.

โ€œGiven the serious nature of the allegations made by the deceasedโ€™s mother and the conflicting account given by the Force Public Relation Officer, it is crucial that the investigation remains impartial and uncompromised in order to restore public confidence and ensure that justice prevails.

โ€œI urge you to closely monitor the investigation and ensure that it is conducted with utmost integrity and transparency,โ€ the activist stated in the letter.
