Civil society organizations are intensifying pressure on the Presidency to ensure the prosecution of former Governor Yahaya Bello over alleged fraud amounting to N80 billion.
The Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC) had initiated charges against Bello, but delays in his prosecution have sparked concerns about the governmentโs commitment to combating corruption.
Okpanachi Jacob, National Coordinator of the Coalition of Civil Society for Good Governance (CCSGG), and Peter Onuma, Coordinator of the Kogi Conscience Liberation Movement (KCLM), addressed these concerns at a joint press conference in Abuja on Monday.
They called on President Bola Ahmed Tinubu to expedite action on the matter, citing public skepticism regarding the governmentโs sincerity in the fight against corruption.
Okpanachi emphasized the urgency of addressing the situation, stating, โWe urge all relevant government agencies to expedite action in the war against corruption. Nigerians and citizens of Kogi State are becoming increasingly impatient over the delayed prosecution of former Governor Yahaya Bello for alleged N80 billion fraud.โ
He highlighted the detrimental effects of corruption on Kogi Stateโs economy, including heightened poverty levels, reduced civil servant incomes, and increased crime rates.
Acknowledging the EFCCโs efforts, Okpanachi urged for more decisive action to restore public confidence in the anti-corruption fight.
โWe call on President Bola Ahmed Tinubu to ensure prompt action, as requested by Kogi State citizens, to uphold the Renewed Hope Agenda and demonstrate commitment to combating corruption,โ he added.
Peter Onuma echoed similar sentiments, stressing the importance of adherence to legal processes.
โFormer Governor Yahaya Belloโs attempt to transfer his case to the state is an indirect maneuver to evade court processes. President Bola Tinubu must provide the necessary support for due process,โ Onuma asserted.
He underscored the significance of transparency within the ruling APC party, emphasizing that accountability is essential for maintaining the integrity of the political system.
The groups jointly called for swift prosecution of Bello and urged the Presidency to exhibit unwavering dedication to tackling corruption effectively.
