As the ninth season of Big Brother Naija (BBNaija) approaches, MultiChoice Nigeria CEO John Ugbe has addressed criticism from previous housemates who felt they didn’t receive enough screen time.

Ugbe explained that equal screen time for all housemates is not possible in entertainment, likening it to a movie where actors can’t have equal time.

“The cameras tend to follow activity, so if you’re sleeping and others are awake, we won’t put the camera on someone sleeping for an hour just to equalize,” Ugbe said. He emphasized that the show is about being oneself and that those who have been authentic have done well.

Ugbe confirmed that the new season will run from July 28 to October 6, with Ebuka Obi-Uchendu returning as host and Toke Makinwa hosting the weekly recap show on Showmax, Big Brother Naija Buzz.

Despite criticism and calls for a ban due to indecency and immorality, Ugbe believes the show has benefits for housemates, audiences, and Nigeria. He noted that some audiences see value in the program despite its controversies.

In a separate announcement, MultiChoice Nigeria revealed a reduction in the prize money for the winner of Season 9, from N120 million to N100 million, plus a brand new SUV.

BBNaija has consistently faced criticism for its portrayal of indecency, immorality, and perceived favoritism towards certain housemates. However, Ugbe’s explanation and the show’s continued popularity suggest that it will remain a significant part of Nigeria’s entertainment landscape.
