In a surprising turn of events, the Confederation of African Football (CAF) has announced that the Nest of Champions in Uyo is the only stadium approved for the first and second rounds of the CAF Champions League (CAFCL) and CAF Confederation Cup (CAFCC) preliminary stage in Nigeria.
This decision means that Nigeria’s representatives will play all their home games in Uyo.
The announcement has sparked disappointment among fans and clubs alike, as it centralizes all matches to a single location, impacting home advantage and logistical arrangements.
The affected clubs include Rangers, Remo Stars, Enyimba, and El-Kanemi Warriors, who now face the challenge of adapting to this new situation.
Rangers, known for their passionate fan base in Enugu, expressed their frustration with the decision.
“Playing at home gives us a unique advantage, and our fans are a crucial part of our success. It’s disheartening to know they won’t have the chance to support us on our home turf,” a club representative stated.
Remo Stars, who have been on a meteoric rise, echoed similar sentiments.
“We were looking forward to showcasing our progress to our local supporters in Sagamu. This decision takes away that opportunity,” said the club’s spokesperson.
Enyimba, one of Nigeria’s most successful clubs, also voiced their concerns.
“While we understand the need for standardization, it’s disappointing that our fans in Aba will miss out on the excitement of these crucial matches,” remarked an Enyimba official.
El-Kanemi Warriors, based in Maiduguri, face perhaps the most significant logistical challenge, with the distance to Uyo posing a considerable hurdle.
“The travel and accommodation logistics will be demanding for both the team and our supporters. We hope CAF reconsiders in the future,” said a club representative.
The Nest of Champions, with its world-class facilities, remains a premier venue, but the unified location for all preliminary home games is seen as a setback for the diversity and spirit of Nigerian club football.
As the clubs prepare for their continental campaigns, the focus will now shift to making the best of the situation and striving for success in Uyo.
