Court reinstates Philip Shaibu as Edo Deputy Governor

A Federal High Court in Abuja has nullified the impeachment of Philip Shaibu as the Deputy Governor of Edo State. Justice James Omotosho delivered the judgment on Wednesday, ordering Shaibuโ€™s reinstatement on the grounds that the Edo State House of Assembly did not follow due process.

Shaibu, present in court, reportedly shed tears of joy upon hearing the judgeโ€™s decision. Justice Omotosho ruled that the allegations used to justify Shaibuโ€™s impeachment were legally untenable and did not constitute gross misconduct.

The judge also directed the Inspector General of Police to provide security for Shaibu, enabling him to resume his duties until the end of his tenure. Additionally, the appointment of a new Deputy Governor in Shaibuโ€™s place was set aside.

However, the Edo State House of Assembly has appealed the judgment and filed a stay of execution pending the outcome of the appeal.
