In response to the anticipated nationwide protest under the #EndBadGovernance movement, the Federal Capital Territory (FCT) Police Command has strategically deployed 4,200 personnel across Abuja.
The move, announced by FCT Police Public Relations Officer, SP Josephine Adeh, aims to maintain public safety and prevent any potential disruption.
The planned protest, organized by human rights activists and Nigerian youths, seeks to highlight issues of hunger and hardship affecting the nation. In anticipation of large gatherings, the police command has proactively allocated resources and personnel to key areas within the capital.
This deployment includes visibility policing, the use of explosive ordinance device (EOD) experts, and strategic patrols, all intended to ensure the safety of both protesters and the public.
“The proactive deployment is aimed at ensuring public safety, protection of protesters, and preventing protests from being hijacked by non-state actors,” Adeh stated. She emphasized the importance of maintaining peace, urging that any demonstrations remain non-violent.
Commissioner of Police FCT, CP Benneth C. Igweh, reiterated the importance of peaceful protests, highlighting that while the right to protest is acknowledged, any form of violence or lawlessness will not be tolerated. The police are prepared to intervene to prevent damage to property or loss of life.
The FCT Police Command also encouraged residents to remain vigilant and report any suspicious activities, providing multiple emergency contact numbers for prompt response.
As the city braces for the protest, the authorities remain focused on balancing the right to protest with the need to maintain order and public safety.
