Governor Inuwa Yahaya of Gombe State has announced that his government spends N150 million monthly to maintain cleanliness across the state.
Yahaya stated the administration’s commitment to environmental conservation through proper waste management and extensive tree planting initiatives.
During the inauguration of the 2024 desilt exercise for major storm drains in Gombe metropolis on Wednesday, Yahaya pointed out the importance of street sweeping in demonstrating the government’s dedication to environmental sustainability and the overall well-being of its residents.
The governor called on residents to support the government’s efforts by utilizing the newly constructed waste collection centers in their communities, stressing that indiscriminate dumping of waste in drains contributes significantly to environmental challenges, particularly flooding, hence the need for collective responsibility to prevent waste from entering drainage systems.
“The impact of flooding, in terms of damage to lives and property, makes it imperative for concerted actions.
“We are commencing the clearing of major water channels to ensure the free flow of water.
“This initiative is critical to avert flooding and ensure the protection of human lives, property, and infrastructure. Additionally, it will prevent the outbreak of diseases among our communities,” Inuwa stated.
The governor noted that improper waste disposal in major storm drains is the primary cause of flooding within the metropolis. Despite efforts by relevant ministries, departments, and agencies to educate communities on the dangers of such practices, significant challenges persist.
“It has therefore become a policy of this administration to clear all water channels at the beginning of every rainy season,” he added.
Governor Yahaya reiterated the government’s commitment to environmental conservation through effective waste management and massive tree planting across the state.
He announced plans to construct 21 additional waste collection centers under the Agro-Climatic Resilience in Semi-Arid Landscapes (ACReSAL) project, implemented in partnership with the World Bank.
He said the state Environmental Protection Agency (GOSEPA) would ensure the daily evacuation of waste from collection centers in residential areas to maintain a cleaner and healthier environment.
