Herdsmen invade Benue community, kill 13

No fewer than 13 persons have been allegedly killed by suspected herdsmen who invaded a community in Agatu Local Government Area of Benue State.

DAILY POST learnt that the herdsmen, while carrying out the attack, burned houses and looted properties as they moved.

A source from the community who didnโ€™t want to be named for fear of victimisation told newsmen in Makurdi: โ€œYesterday, July 9, 2024, Fulani herdsmen attacked Olegomachi community of Agatu LGA and killed 13 people.โ€

The caretaker chairman of Agatu Council, Phillip Ebenyakwu, confirmed the attack.

Ebenyakwu, in a phone call with journalists, said: โ€œYes, itโ€™s confirmed. There was an attack. It happened yesterday evening. The number they gave me was 10 people killed.

โ€œThey were armed with sophisticated weapons. They were looting, robbing and burning houses. And they killed people.

โ€œAbout seven houses were burned down. They took away so many properties. Animals, including goats and chickens, were also carted away.

โ€œIt has been reported to police. The DSS is aware too. Iโ€™m trying to ensure that security men visit the place. Arrangements are being made for them to visit the place.โ€

When contacted, the Police Public Relations Officer, SP Catherine Anene, said she had yet to get the report from Agatu.
